Maternity couple in a lavender field in Bay Area CA

There’s something magical about standing in the middle of a lavender field. The rows of vibrant purple blooms, the calming fragrance floating through the air, and the golden California sunshine create an experience that feels almost like stepping into the Provence countryside in France.

As a luxury Bay Area maternity and family photographer, I’m always searching for beautiful locations that make for unforgettable memories and stunning photographs. Over the years, I’ve visited some incredible lavender fields throughout Northern California, and these are a few of my absolute favorites.

Whether you are planning a fun family day out, a sweet date, or just want somewhere gorgeous to soak up the season, these fields absolutely deserve a spot on your summer list.

When Is Lavender Season in Northern California?

If you’re dreaming of those gorgeous purple fields, you’ll want to mark your calendar for late May through early July. That’s when most Northern California lavender farms hit their peak bloom, with June being the sweet spot for the fullest, most vibrant color. Keep in mind that bloom timing can shift a little from year to year depending on the weather, so it’s always worth checking with your favorite farm before you make the drive out.

Northern California’s Top Lavender Fields

Capay Valley Lavender (Capay, CA)

Nestled in the scenic rolling hills of Yolo County, Capay Valley Lavender is one of the most picturesque lavender farms in Northern California. The farm spans 28 acres, including several acres dedicated to organically grown lavender, creating endless rows of beautiful purple blooms during peak season. Visitors can enjoy farm tours, workshops, and browse handcrafted lavender products made right on the property.

If you’re looking for a peaceful weekend escape from the Bay Area, this is one of the best places to experience California lavender in full bloom.

Newcastle Lavender Farms (Newcastle, CA)

Located in Placer County, Newcastle Lavender Farms offers a charming family-owned experience that feels intimate and welcoming. During the blooming season, visitors can stroll through fragrant fields, shop for locally made lavender products, and even book private photography sessions. The farm is typically open for special events from late spring through early summer.

The soft purple rows and surrounding countryside make this one of my favorite hidden gems in Northern California.

Bywater Hollow Lavender Farm (Lincoln, CA)

Bywater Hollow is a dream location for photographers. Beyond the seasonal lavender fields, the property features ponds, tree-lined pathways, open meadows, and beautiful natural landscapes year-round. During June, the farm hosts U-pick lavender weekends, making it a wonderful destination for families with young children.

As a Bay Area maternity and family photographer, I love locations that offer variety, and Bywater Hollow has so many beautiful backdrops in one place.

Araceli Farms (Dixon, CA)

Just outside of Dixon, Araceli Farms has become one of Northern California’s most beloved lavender destinations. The farm features several acres of sustainably grown lavender with multiple varieties, creating a stunning landscape when everything is in bloom. Their mission centers around community, accessibility, and creating a peaceful place where visitors can slow down and reconnect with nature.

The rustic barn and expansive fields also make this a gorgeous location for summer portraits and special occasions.

Dreaming of a Lavender Field Maternity or Family Session in Northern California?

As a Bay Area maternity and family photographer, lavender fields hold a really special place in my heart. There’s something about the soft purple blooms, the calming scent that lingers, and the peaceful stillness of those fields that creates portraits that feel genuinely timeless.

If a lavender field session is on your heart, I recommend reaching out around April, a few months before the season begins. If you are expecting, learn about when to book your maternity shoot.

Many of Northern California’s lavender farms have limited availability for photography, require site fees or reservations, or only open their fields during certain windows of the blooming season. Every spring I personally check in with the farms to confirm their expected peak bloom and reserve dates as early as I can, because these locations have become so beloved for maternity and family portraits that the best evenings fill up fast.

A little planning goes a long way here, and I love helping my clients think through every detail so that when we show up, the lavender is at its most gorgeous and the only thing you have to do is soak it all in.

If you’ve been dreaming of a summer maternity or family session surrounded by fields of purple, I’d love to help you plan the perfect experience.
