Bay Area

The first few weeks after your baby arrives are a complete blur. Between the middle-of-the-night feeds, the rotating visitors, and the learning-everything-all-at-once of new parenthood, adding a newborn photoshoot to the list can feel like a lot. I hear this from families all the time, and I want you to know something: it does not have to feel that way.

A well-planned session is one where you show up, you hold your baby, and everything else is handled. That is exactly the experience I build for every family I work with. If you are preparing for a Bay Area newborn session soon, here are the things that will make the biggest difference.

Book During the Newborn Window

The ideal window to photograph a newborn is within the first two weeks of life. The first two weeks offer a special opportunity to document your baby during those earliest days, when every detail feels new. While the first two weeks are an ideal time for newborn portraits, every baby is different, so reach out even if your baby is a little older.

This is exactly why I always encourage families to book their newborn session before baby arrives. Reaching out during pregnancy gives us time to plan your session and create an experience that feels personal and thoughtfully prepared. It removes the pressure entirely during those first overwhelming days at home when the last thing you want to do is make a bunch of phone calls.

If you are already past the two-week mark and worried you have missed your chance, reach out anyway. Every baby is different, and I will always do my best to work with where you are.

Feed Your Baby Right Before You Arrive

This is one of the simplest things you can do, and it makes an enormous difference to how smoothly the session flows. Your baby’s needs come first throughout the session. If your little one needs to be fed, soothed, or settled, we simply follow their lead and continue when they are ready. If your baby needs to be fed during the session, we can simply pause and give them the time they need.

Keep Your Wardrobe Simple

Your baby is the heart of these images. Your role, and your partner’s, is to complement that story beautifully.

If styling feels overwhelming on top of everything else a new baby brings, that is what I am here for. Personal styling guidance is part of the full-service experience so you never have to figure out the details on your own.

Let the Session Be Baby-Led

The most beautiful images almost never come from forced moments. They come from the in-between, when no one is trying too hard and everyone is simply present. My sessions are designed to be unhurried from start to finish. You do not need to perform for the camera or manage every little detail. Your job on session day is to show up, be present with your baby, and trust the process.

The newborn stage is impossibly short. These images are what your family will reach for long after the tiny fingers and newborn smell have become a distant, beautiful memory. They are worth slowing down for.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Meg Karaan Photography offer in-home newborn sessions in the Bay Area?

Yes. In-home newborn sessions are a wonderful option for families who want to capture those early days in the space where real life is actually happening. There is something irreplaceable about your own home as a backdrop during the newborn stage. In-home newborn sessions give you the opportunity to document these early days in a familiar setting that is already meaningful to your family. Reach out, and we can talk through whether in-home or studio would be the better fit for your family.

What areas of the Bay Area does Meg Karaan Photography serve for newborn sessions?

Meg Karaan Photography is based in Walnut Creek and serves families throughout the greater Bay Area, including San Francisco, San Jose, Napa, Sonoma, Sacramento, and surrounding communities. If you are unsure whether your location is covered, just reach out. I am always happy to discuss travel and session options.

What does a newborn session with Meg Karaan Photography include?

The Signature Session includes a pre-session consultation, personal styling guidance, a full portrait session, and a professionally edited gallery with a minimum of forty images. After the session, we meet for a design and ordering appointment where you select custom artwork and prints for your home. Digital images and artwork are purchased separately. Review all session details.

What happens if my newborn won’t stop crying or won’t settle during the session?

This is one of the most common concerns I hear, and the honest answer is that it happens sometimes, and it is completely fine. A crying baby is not a ruined session. It usually means baby needs a feed, a diaper change, or a few minutes of skin-to-skin contact with you. We pause, we tend to baby, and we start again. My sessions are built around the understanding that newborns run on their own schedule. Nothing is lost by stopping. Some of my favorite portraits have come right after a fussy stretch, when baby finally settles into the deepest sleep of the day.

Do I need to bring props or accessories to a newborn photoshoot?

No. Personal styling guidance and access to a curated client wardrobe are part of my full-service experience, so you do not have to figure out every detail on your own. If you have a sentimental item you would like incorporated, like a family heirloom blanket or a meaningful piece, let me know ahead of time and we can absolutely work it into the session.

How long does a Bay Area newborn session typically last?

The Signature Session includes a one-hour portrait session. My newborn sessions are completely baby-led and unhurried, so I allow space within that experience for your baby’s natural rhythm and needs. The goal is never to rush.
