Why booking early makes all the difference
Here’s something many expecting parents don’t realize until it’s too late: the best maternity photographers in the Bay Area tend to book out 2 to 3 months in advance. This isn’t a scarcity tactic. It’s simply the reality of a limited number of weekend sessions, prime outdoor locations and photographers who are serious about their craft.
When you wait until the third trimester to start your search, you often find yourself choosing from whoever is available rather than whoever you truly love and your maternity photos deserve more than that.
Beyond availability, there’s another reason timing matters: your body. The way your bump looks, feels, and photographs changes week by week. Booking early gives you the freedom to schedule your session at the exact week when you’ll feel and look your most radiant, not just whenever a spot happens to be open.
Step One: Book your Bay Area maternity photographer at 18 – 24 weeks

The moment you hit your second trimester is the perfect time to start researching photographers in the Bay Area and to book one whose style speaks to you. Most maternity photographers (especially those with coveted outdoor locations all over the Bay Area) fill up quickly, often 2 – 3 months in advance.
Waiting until the third trimester to begin looking for a photographer for your Bay Area maternity photoshoot is one of the most common mistakes expecting parents make. You may find your photographer is already fully booked for your desired date.
It’s also worth noting that some photographers use carefully curated or private locations that are not widely shared. If you’re drawn to a specific portfolio, it’s likely that the look and setting are unique to that photographer. Reaching out early helps ensure you can work with the artist whose work you love most.
Step Two: Schedule your Bay Area maternity photoshoot around 28 – 34 weeks

This is the golden window. Your bump is beautifully round and prominent, but you still have the energy to enjoy a session outdoors or in-studio. In my professional opinion, I would aim to shoot your Bay Area maternity photoshoot between 30 – 32 weeks. It gives the photographer enough time to turn around your images as well. My turnaround process takes up to 2-3 weeks.
28 weeks
Bump visible, energy still high
30 – 32 weeks
The sweet spot. Full bump, comfortable
34 weeks
Still fine, but schedule with buffer
If you’re expecting multiples, I highly suggest scheduling your maternity photoshoot a few weeks earlier. If you are expecting twins or triples, the best time would be around 26 – 28 weeks as twin and triplet pregnancies often arrive sooner.
Step Three: Factor in the Bay Area’s seasons and locations

The Bay Area is a maternity photographer’s dream with lavender fields in Capay Valley, scenic beaches in Half Moon Bay, snowy peaks in South Lake Tahoe, there are truly breathtaking backdrops, all within reach.
If you’re due in winter, your ideal outdoor session window might fall in autumn when fall foliage is striking. Filoli Historic House and Garden offers a stunning backdrop this time of year, with rich seasonal color that will photograph beautifully for your Bay Area maternity photoshoot.
If you’re due in summer, those Bay Area golden hour sessions in spring offer cooler temperatures and soft light. It is truly one of my favorite seasons to shoot, thanks to the abundance of blooming fields and gardens throughout the Bay Area and surrounding cities like Sacramento and San Jose. Planning around Bay Area’s seasonal weather can make a big difference, and I’m always happy to guide you on what to expect and when to schedule your Bay Area maternity photoshoot for the best results.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I still book if I’m already 32 weeks?
It does not hurt to ask if I have some space in my books! I would reach out immediately and try to be flexible with dates, and you’ll likely be able to make it work. While weekends tend to book out for me, a weekday may work out for the both of us. Another win for weekdays, less crowds!
How far in advance should I book if I want a specific location?
For popular spots like Filoli, especially during fall or spring, booking 2–3 months ahead is wise. Weekday sessions often have more flexibility than weekends.
Should my partner and/or kids be in the photos?
Absolutely! I love capturing those sweet moments with your partner and your little ones. It is all part of the story. We can definitely discuss how much you would want your maternity photoshoot to be just your solo portraits of yourself and then including your partner and littles.
